25th APRIL: ANZAC DAY AN IMPORTANT DATE
Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand.
In 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of an Allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula. The objective was to capture Istanbul, capital of the Ottoman Empire and an ally of Germany. The ANZAC force landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Turkish Army. What had been planned as a bold strike to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stale-mate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months.
At the end of 1915, the Allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian and 2,700 New Zealand soldiers died. News of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians and New Zealanders at home and 25 April quickly became the day on which they remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in war.

The special Anzac Day ceremony will take place at 11.00 AM under the Menin Gate in presence of their Excellencies the Ambassadors of Australia, New Zealand and Turkey. The ceremony will be accompanied by the Ypriana Harmony and soprano Rebecca Woodmore.

25 APRIL: ANZAC DAY EEN BELANGRIJKE DATUM
Anzac Day is de verjaardag van de eerste belangrijke militaire actie waaraan de Australische en Nieuw Zeelandse strijdkrachten deelnamen tijdens de Grote Oorlog. Het acroniem ANZAC staat voor Australisch en Nieuw Zeeland Leger Korps van wie de militairen Anzacs genoemd werden. Anzac Day blijft één van de belangrijkste nationale herdenkingsmomenten van zowel Australië als Nieuw Zeeland.
In 1915, maakten de Australische en Nieuw Zeelandse militairen deel uit van een geallieerde expeditie met als doel het schiereiland van Gallipoli te veroveren.Het objectief was Istamboel, hoofdstad van het Ottomaanse rijk en bondgenoot van Duitsland in te nemen. De ANZAC's landden in Gallipoli op 25 april 1915, onder zware weerstand van het Turkse leger. Wat gepland was als snelle aanval om Turkije uit de oorlog te schakelen werd een impasse, en een campagne die acht maanden aansleepte.
Aan het eind van 1915, werden de geallieerde troepen geëvacueerd nadat beide partijen zware verliezen en grote ontberingen hadden geleden. Meer dan 8.000 Australische en 2.700 Nieuw Zeelandse militairen stierven. Het nieuws van de landing in Gallipoli had een diepe impact op Australiërs en Nieuw Zeelanders en 25 april werd snel de dag waarop zij het offer van diegenen herinnerden die in oorlog gestorven waren.

De speciale Anzac Day ceremonie gaat door om 11.00h onder de Menenpoort in aanwezigheid van de ambassadeurs van Australië, Nieuw-Zeeland en Turkije. De ceremonie wordt opgeluisterd door de Ypriana harmonie en sopraan Rebecca Woodmore.
