Het Regiment bestond uit vrijwilligers, hoofdzakelijk Schotten, waaronder veel zakenlieden die te Londen woonden.<\/p><p>Overgebracht naar Rouen ter versterking, werden ze eerst te werk gesteld in de haven om schepen te lossen (!) &#8230;om het \u00e9chte militaire leven te leren?<\/p><p>Eind oktober 1914, wanneer de Duitse aanval op Ieper dreigde de Britse linies te doorbreken en catastrofaal te worden, werden zij echter (per vrachtwagen en dubbeldekbussen) naar Mesen overgebracht en op 31 oktober &#8211; Halloween &#8211; ingezet op de baan naar Wytschate.<\/p><p>Met uiterste moed verdedigden zij de Noorderflank van het stadje en slaagden ze erin de Duitse voortgang te vertragen en de doorbraak tegen te houden. De verliezen waren dan ook zeer groot, niet minder dan 394 van de 700 officieren!<\/p><p>Beroemd vooral is het bekende schilderij van hun weerstand bij de brandende molen van Mesen en ook het schilderij van hun aankomst in Ieper, per dubbeldekbus (!) bij de Ieperse Hallen. Een gedenkteken voor het Regiment staat bij Mesen, aan de oosterzijde van de baan naar Wijtschate, in de vorm van een Schots kruis waarop ook alle &#8221; battle honours&#8221; vermeld staan.<\/p><p>Sinds de oprichting van de Menenpoort is het een traditie geworden dat het Regiment (nu nog een Companie van het Londen Regiment) in zijn traditioneel uniform en vergezeld van veel oudgedienden en sympatisanten om de drie\/vijf jaar de streek van Ieper bezoekt.
