Ladies and gentleman, dames en heren,<\/p>

Let me first welcome our guests from the United States from the Doughboy Foundation. They have started a daily Last Post Ceremony at the new World War I Memorial in Washington which will be unveiled in September.<\/p>

Vandaag 79 jaar geleden, op 8 mei 1945, kwam er een einde aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Europa. Duitsland gaf zich onvoorwaardelijk over. De 2e<\/sup> werelbrand in amper drie decennia was ten einde maar liet een nog groter spoor van menselijk leed na dan de 1ste<\/sup> Wereldoorlog die we hier onder deze poort elke dag herdenken.<\/p>

Een verschrikkelijke dictatuur was gevallen ten koste van miljoenen mensenlevens, niet alleen soldaten maar ook gewone burgers die louter om hun ras of overtuiging in de concentratiekampen terecht kwamen en daar onmenselijk behandeld werden.<\/p>

Met dit einde werden echter ook nieuwe kansen gecre\u00eberd.<\/p>

Onder deze poort komen veel jonge mensen die soms onbegrijpend kijken naar de op de muren gebeitelde namen van 55.000 vermiste soldaten, meestal ook jonge mensen. Nu de generatie van de Grote Oorlog definitief tot de geschiedenis behoort, kijken zij vol eerbied naar de soms aanwezige veteranen van de 2e<\/sup> Wereldoorlog. Het respect voor hen en wat ze deden spreekt uit hun blik.<\/p>

Ook voor Belgi\u00eb en de stad Ieper kwam definitief een einde aan de 2e<\/sup> Wereldoorlog. Nochtans was Ieper al bevrijd in september 1944, maar nog steeds bestond de vrees dat het tij nog zou kunnen keren. 8 mei 1945 maakte komaf met die gedachte.<\/p>

Belgi\u00eb had zich niet zomaar neergelegd bij de bezetting. De verzetshaarden bloeiden en vele kleinschalige en soms grootschalige acties werden ondernomen. Ook dit ten koste van het leven van menig verzetstrijder en met grote gevolgen voor de betrokken families. Ook voor hen was VE-Day de consecratie van 4 jaar moed en zelfopoffering.<\/p>

Today, 79 years ago, on 8th<\/sup> May 1945, the Second World War came to an end. Courage and self-sacrifice are keywords for two generations of vaillaint fighters. They fought for justice, for freedom and for the defence of our country. They gave us back our peace and our independence: this we must and will never forget.<\/p>

Some values are very dear to the Last Post Association. These include comradeship, courage, self sacrifice and loyalty. Even today this has to remain a vivid memory and an example for us all. Commemoration, remembering is the only aim of the Last Post Association.\u00a0 This is why the bugles are sounded each day under the Menin Gate. This is also why we want to go on with our task into perpetuity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
