Toespraak – 80 Jaar na het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog<\/h4>

Dames en heren,
Ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>

Vandaag 80 jaar geleden kwam er een einde aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Europa maar liet een nog groter spoor van menselijk leed na dan de Eerste Wereldoorlog die we hier elke dag herdenken.<\/p>

Onder deze poort komen veel jonge mensen die soms onbegrijpend kijken naar de op de muren gebeitelde namen van 55.000 vermiste soldaten. Nu de generatie van de Groote Oorlog definitief tot de geschiedenis behoort, kijken zij vol eerbied naar de soms aanwezige veteranen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog en andere conflicten.<\/p>

Belgi\u00eb had zich niet zomaar neergelegd bij de bezetting. Vele acties werden ondernomen. Ook dit ten koste van het leven van menig verzetstrijder. Ook voor hen was VE-Day de consecratie van 4 jaar moed en zelfopoffering.<\/p>

Today marks 80 years since the guns of the Second World War fell silent. Eight decades since the world emerged from the shadow of terror, destruction, and tyranny. And yet, every evening we gather here under this monument of memory.<\/p>

With the sounding of the Last Post, we offer our gratitude and our deepest respect to all those who gave their lives not for conquest or glory, but for something far more precious: our freedom, our dignity, our future.<\/p>

This daily act is more than tradition – it is a promise to remember, to honour, and to never forget the price they paid for the peace we enjoy.<\/p>

In a world where freedom and peace are once again under threat – from brutal aggression, from the suffering of innocents in places like Ukraine – these ceremonies matter more than ever. They remind us of what was lost, and of what must never be lost again.<\/p>

The Menin Gate is not only a monument of the past – it is a warning to the present and a message to the future. And the Last Post Association, with dedication, ensures that the message will continue to be heard.
