The lesson from the past

Message from the Last Post Association

For nearly a century (ever since July 1928), the Last Post Association has sounded the Last Post every day under the Menin Gate Memorial in Ieper to commemorate those who died during the First World War.

This daily tribute reminds us of the terror and horror of all wars, a message that over the years we have passed on to hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world.

It would be nice to think that mankind gradually becomes wiser as time passes, by learning from the lessons of the past. Sadly, events in Ukraine – and so many other places – show that this is not always the case.

This makes us extremely sad, but it motivates us more than ever to continue with our daily task of reminding people that war is never the answer and that there are other ways of securing a better and happier future for us all.

The Last Post

Every day, at 8 o’clock in the evening. The daily act of homage.
